The classic Leslie's Cube is updated to show all four surfaces together. The aluminum plate heats to a uniform temperature of approximately 70 degrees C or 100 degrees C, depending on the setting. The four surfaces (black, white, silver, polished silver) have different thermal emissivities, causing them to radiate different amounts of radiation even though they are all at the same temperature. The photo shows the Leslie's Cube in visible light on the left and in the infrared on the right. Notice that the white and black surfaces emit almost the same in the infrared.

Although there are only two set temperatures, it is possible to heat it to any temperature between room temperature and 100 degrees C by turning it off when it reaches the desired temperature. The temperature will stay nearly constant for a while because it takes a long time to cool off.

The temperature can be read with a multimeter (measuring the resistance of the embedded thermistor) or using a PASCO Temperature Sensor (such as the Wireless Temperature Link PS-3222 or the PASPORT Temperature Sensor PS-2125). An adapter cable (3.5 mm to two banana plugs) is supplied for use with a temperature sensor.

The radiation from each surface can be measured using a Radiation Sensor (TD-8553) and a digital multimeter. The Radiation Sensor can also be read with a Voltage Sensor (such as UI-5110) plugged into an 850 or 550 Universal Interface. Also, the differences in radiation can be shown with an infrared camera.

Features

  • Four surfaces (black, white, silver, shiny)
  • All surfaces can be viewed at the same time.
  • Carrying handles
  • Two temperature settings (about 70 deg C and 100 deg C)
  • Embedded thermistor for measuring the temperature

Demonstrate

  • Demonstrate why automobile radiators are black.
  • Different surfaces at the same temperature radiate energy at different rates.
  • Although white and black look drastically different in the visible spectrum, they are similar in the infrared.
  • Shiny silver reflects visible light but is not a good emitter in the infrared. This is why you wrap a baked potato in shiny aluminum foil to keep the heat in.

  • 1x Leslie's Cube
  • 1x Power Adapter (24 V @ 2.5A)
  • 1x Adapter cable for temperature sensor (3.5 mm jack to two banana plugs)
